Where a foreigner stays in a hotel in China, the hotel shall register the accommodation in accordance with regulations on public security administration of the hotel industry and submit the registration information to the local public security organ.

Where a foreigner resides or stays in a domicile other than a hotel, the foreigner or the host shall register with the public security organ in the place of residence within twenty-four hours of arrival.

(Note: Foreigners renting apartments or staying with friends must register at the local police station or via the online system within 24 hours of moving in. Failure to register may result in a warning or a fine of up to ¥2,000. Re-registration is required after each re-entry into China.)

外国人在中国境内旅馆住宿的，旅馆应当按照旅馆业治安管理的有关规定为其办理住宿登记，并向所在地公安机关报送外国人住宿登记信息。

外国人在旅馆以外的其他住所居住或者住宿的，应当在入住后二十四小时内由本人或者留宿人，向居住地的公安机关办理登记。

（注：租房或住在朋友家的外国人，须在入住后24小时内到当地派出所或通过线上系统办理住宿登记。未登记可能被警告或罚款2000元以下。每次重新入境后都需要重新登记。）
