Theft, fraud, looting, snatching or extortion is punishable by 5 to 10 days’ detention or a fine of up to ¥2,000; where the circumstances are relatively serious, 10 to 15 days’ detention and a possible fine of up to ¥3,000.

(Update: the revised Law in force from 1 January 2026 splits the former Article 49 in two. This Article 58 now covers only acquisitive property offences; intentional destruction of property moved to Article 59. Fine ceilings rose from ¥500/¥1,000 to ¥2,000/¥3,000.

盗窃、诈骗、哄抢、抢夺或者敲诈勒索的，处五日以上十日以下拘留或者二千元以下罚款；情节较重的，处十日以上十五日以下拘留，可以并处三千元以下罚款。
